Grub, the latest darling on
the café scene in Singapore, opened its doors to the public on May 1st
2013. Since the completion of Bishan Park’s redevelopment, Grub is the only
café to set up shop in Bishan Park One.
Grub prides itself on
serving up quality food that are prepared with as natural ingredients as
possible, without using artificial preservatives, additives or flavorings. They
also source their ingredients from farmers, fishermen, and artisanal producers
who practice responsible farming.
A detailed map of Bishan –
Ang Mo Kio Park 1 after its redevelopment showing the parking options as well
as the new facilities built. Grub is located at 501 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 and
they recommend that their guests park at the car park along Sin Ming Avenue
which is opposite Block 408.
Though Grub may be the
first café in Bishan Park 1, they are most definitely not the first in the
industry. Prior to the redevelopment of Bishan Park, Bishan Park Two already
had several food and beverage outlets in it. Almost all the national parks
scattered throughout the island has at least one café housed in it.

various parks that offer café facilities. However this map does not include
parks that offer other dining options such as fine dining restaurants and bars.

The national parks of
Singapore have become more than places for people to exercise in or enjoy
nature. It is a norm for parks to provide facilities beyond the basic exercise
stations or sports equipment rental stores. Facilities such as spas and
restaurants are now common sights in national parks.
“We
constantly bring in different amenities to different parks to add vibrancy and
create a more holistic experience for the parks’ visitors,” said Mr Heng Wee
Peng, the Marketing Executive of the Lifestyle Division for the National Parks
Board.
Singaporeans are accustomed
to these modern parks and they expect nothing less. It has become part of the
park culture here in Singapore to go to the park to have a walk and enjoy a cup
of coffee afterwards.
“I come to Bishan Park at
least once a week to have a walk and afterwards I’ll have a cup of coffee with
my friends,” said Nellie Tan, a resident of the area. “I think the park strikes
the perfect balance between modernity and nature. I love being able to come to
the park to grab a bite while appreciating the nature surrounding us.”

Rising Star in Singapore Fencing, Choy Yu Yong
By Nicolette Soh
Sixteen year old Choy Yu Yong won a Bronze Medal at the 2013 Asian Youth Games in Nanjing last month. His achievement marks a milestone for Singapore fencing as it is the first medal that Singapore has won in Fencing at the Asian Youth Games.
Yu Yong picked up fencing at the young age of 13. After 2 years, he entered the national team and began representing Singapore.
After just three years of training, Yu Yong did the nation proud by bringing home a Bronze medal (Cadet category) from the Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships last year. Yu Yong’s Bronze medal was the best result Singapore has ever seen for the sabre event in that particular competition.
Yu Yong was also the youngest fencer to compete this year at the 2013 World Fencing Championships in Budapest.
